Faithful Plan B readers know that I'm all atwitter about the potential of a coming emergaster / disastency. So, tingling with enthusiasm, I fired up the grid, dialed in my computer, booted up the url, and got mysself straight to ready.gov to see if they're thinkin what I'm thinkin.
Come to find out, the Defenders of the Federation are just as clueless as I am about exactly what I'm supposed to get "ready" for. "Find out what kinds of disasters, both natural and man-made, are most likely to occur in your area and how you will be notified." Find out what disasters...? Are you kidding me. "Find out what disasters" was not my college concentration (I knew that basketweaving class was a waste). But wait, I'm not being fair... maybe I can "find out what disaster" by reading the website in more detail. Oh yes, here it is: "However, there are important differences among potential emergencies that will impact the decisions you make and the actions you take. Learn more about the potential emergencies that could happen where you live and the appropriate way to respond to them."
"Important differences?" Ya think? "Learn more"? Oh Bama, won't you please hep me in my time of need... and right now I need clarity. Tell me something goood: "Emergency preparedness is no longer the sole concern of earthquake prone Californians and those who live in the part of the country known as "Tornado Alley." For Americans, preparedness must now account for man-made disasters as well as natural ones. Knowing what to do during an emergency is an important part of being prepared and may make all the difference when seconds count."
Well, here's the good news, at the bottom of that same greatly informative page, our Savior (the gov'ment) explains that a change in technology is coming to our aid just in the nick of time: "An important benefit of the switch to all-digital broadcasting is that it will free up parts of the valuable broadcast spectrum for public safety communications (such as police, fire departments, and rescue squads)."
Shhwweeewww, well at least our leaders are swiftly acting to make communicatio... hey wait a minute, that same page says the cut-over happens on Feb 17, 2009. Isn't that the thingy that Obama demanded to be moved back six months so he could have time to get more money out to people? And we're supposed to be doing things that "make all the difference when seconds count"? Oh My Gosh. We're a-plane-twisted-longitudinally-around-an-elongated-cone.
Folks, we're on our own. The USofA government is warning us that in the event of the unknown happening the only thing we can count on is that we'll only have ourselves to count on. Well, done Washingtown. I get the message loud and clear. And for crying out loud, if we knew what disaster / emergency was headed our way (especially the man-made ones), why aren't we doing something to prevent it instead of preparing to deal with the consequences??? That's the point. That's the problem. And that's why Uncle Sam tells US to figure it out - they don't have the slightest idea, either.
